Guest bigrabdl Posted August 13, 2005 Report Posted August 13, 2005 Okay folks , When driving my Gal the other day I put her into first gear then all I got was a loud grinding noise and no drive . When I depress the clutch I can select all my gears but I have the same problem with all gears when trying to drive I get this same noise . Any suggestions or anybody had the same problem . Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted August 13, 2005 Report Posted August 13, 2005 Possible failure of the selector cables? or they have popped out of the ball joints at the gearbox end? hit the search engine this has happened to a few members :D Quote
johnb80 Posted August 13, 2005 Report Posted August 13, 2005 Engine mount collapsed pulling the drive shaft(s) out? dunno if it can do this on the Gal but I do know it can happen on several other front wheel drive cars. Regards - JB Quote
Guest bigrabdl Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 I was told it was something called the planet gear ( I think ) , never heard of it . Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 ...it's in the differential, there are four I think plus 2 sun gears, they can break if; for example, you brake the car to a stop without de-clutching, or by heavy tow starting. Quote
seatkid Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 I was told it was something called the planet gear ( I think ) , never heard of it . You only find planet gears on Automatic boxes..... I would check the gear cables and gearlever first. I would agree with MM that it could be a failed CV joint as its in all gears.Jack up one side of the car and with the car in gear. Rotate the lifted front wheel by hand and observe the CV joints and driveshaft. If the driveshaft doesnt turn its the outer CV joint on that wheel. If it turns, look at the inner joint and check that the CV joint (metal bit nearest the gearbox) is turning. Repeat for other side until you checked all CV joints. Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted August 15, 2005 Report Posted August 15, 2005 ...you are of course right seatkid, I was trying to think what the mechanic might mean...and got it wrapped round my neck :) You generally only find epicyclic gearing in Auto boxes of which Sun and Planet gears are component parts. Since our friend has a manual I was trying to figure out if he's trashed the differential. Is catastrophic failure of CV joints common then? I would have said that the car would have got increasingy noisy as the joint failed giving at least some warning of impending doom. (BTW 4 months and I still haven't refitted my undertray...and I've still no problems to report :) let you all know when I finally crash the thing!) Quote
jkspoff Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 Exact same thing happened to me, both drive shafts replaced under warranty. That is almost certain what it is. The warranty company paid out, it was about Quote
Guest hayabusa7 Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 same fault mine engages makes a loud crunhing noise on the shitaxly the driverside drive extension shaft and the gearbox splinedrive coupling are soft and break on these mine has had two... just fitted one today the last one went around 80000 this one is 150000... back on the road again dont suppose it will be long till something else breaks or falls off Quote
